The
existence of Siamese would goes back to 1350, according to a
discovered manuscript with Ayuthaya, the old capital of Siam,
known as Thailand today. On the contray to what we are lead to
believe, The Siamese did not originate in Egypt. The first
specimens were very different from those which we find today.
Their morphology was rather medium-line, like our current
European cats. Old prints represent Siamese cats equipped with
their colour points characteristic and the cat-like savages.
This leading us to believe that this cat has come from the
jungle. The fine silhouette that we currently know is the fruit
of a selection, carried out by American stockbreeders at the
beginning of the 20th century, the fashion wanting to propose
the Eastern origin.
The Royals of Siam adored these cats, which they qualified to be
the most beautiful of the world. Anyone caught outside the Royal
Family with such a prize creature would incur the death penalty
systematically! Therefore when the first Siamese made its
appearance In Europe at the beginning 19th century. Thanks to
the acquisition of two couples by the Consul General of Large
Brittany in Bangkok, Owen Gould, and by the French Augusts Pavia
in 1884 and 1885, with whom the King of Siam, made a gift of the
breed, in 1885. The Siamese’s made their official appearance at
The Crystal Palace Hotel in London and caused all quite a stir,
amongst cat fanciers, thus ensuring the future of the breed.
Since, in addition to the variety “seal-point” (fawn-coloured
points body with dark points), new coat colours were create such
as the “blue point” (blue), “chocolate point” (chocolate) or
“lilac point” (beige rosy). The most new colours are Apricot and
Fawn collared points. |
